Studio Portrait Lighting Workshop
This workshop is for people who are familiar with how to use their camera, but are looking for instruction and inspiration on how to light portraits in a studio environment. Topics include getting your flash off of the camera, TTL and manual flash exposure, using hand held light meters, high speed sync, light modifiers, types of light and lighting setups. All lighting equipment and a model are included for use with the workshop.
The Workshop is four sessions at my home studio in Welland, learning & practicing lighting techniques with hands on instruction & models.

I just completed taking Darren's "Studio Portrait and Lighting Class" in January 2025. The class was a great learning experience and a lot of fun. Darren was very informative and helpful, he was patient and spent the time with each of us if we needed help. Over the four weeks, Darren introduced the different lighting techniques, we had multiple set-ups that started easy using one light and ending with three different light and flash set-ups. We had the pleasure of photographing 3 different models who were helpful with posing and gave us the opportunity to take great photos. I really learned a lot, and met some great people. I highly recommend this course for anyone who would like to learn more about portraits and lighting. I am definitely going to use these tools for my still life and hope to take more portrait images. Each class, you knowledgeably introduced us to various types of lighting equipment such as softboxes and reflectors, which ultimately removed all the fear I had, and I can't wait to purchase some equipment and start practicing. This is my second workshop with Darren and his Portrait Lighting Workshop is a must to do. I am technically challenged when it comes to lighting/settings etc. But Darrens way of teaching is fun, relaxed and hands on is the best way to learn for me. He starts with the basics, explaining what we will be learning and moves onto one light setup, then 2 and then 3 light set ups. The models he finds are awesome and eager to help us with posing which is another area to learn. I look forward to other workshops , you definitely can't go wrong with Darren teaching! Over the course of 3 evenings Darren took us from an introduction to studio lighting to creative ideas in the studio. We were introduced firstly to one light setups, given instruction and a handout on one light styles, then shown multi light set ups and finally multi light setups with creative ideas. Each night had a different model, each with their own distinctive portrait opportunities. The class was limited to 5 students which allowed for lots of shooting time and problem solving time. I personally left the workshop inspired and challenged, anxious to pursue studio lighting further. Highly recommend Studio Portrait Lighting Workshop by Darren. Darren is a wonderful photography instructor who is friendly, knowledgeable and always willing to give any tips, tricks and feedback in a positive manner. The class content was very informative and ideas inspiring and I can't wait to apply what I learned to my photography! In addition, I liked how the studio lighting class was small in size so you are able to get hands-on practice and one on one assistance.
