Years ago a good friend stimulated my interest in photography. I will never forget one of my favorites of his was a black and white image of an angel he had taken in a cemetery. That image has stuck with me. Not only the image itself, but the fact that he was not afraid to walk around a cemetery with a camera looking for beauty. It opened me up to the fact that creating good photographs takes time, effort and sometimes a touch of fearlessness.

In the years that followed I have been taking angel photographs as an ongoing personal project. There is something hauntingly beautiful and peaceful about the subject. In an effort to bring out the feelings I got from the angels, I started to view them as portraits. I was intrigued by how different emotions can be expressed by altering my perspective, the composition and various treatments. The camera certainly is an artistic tool.

In putting together a collection of images for this book, I realized that I needed something more than just images - something to tie together that emotional thread. I was introduced to Elaine George’s poetry through the Canadian Authors Association and when I started reading her work, I knew I had found that connection.
